Hey reader,

This is just a note to say I’ll likely be skipping the next edition due to being away skiing. Right now I’m staying in a small village in France, and will soon be taking the train to Germany (at least, I will be, I’m writing this in advance).

Wherever you are, wishing you a happy holidays!

🛠️Resource spotlight: Discord

Discord is honestly a little underrated when it comes to language learning. There are lots of communities dedicated to languages, often with native speakers who are willing to help learners just for the fin of it. It’s perfect for jumping in and getting a bit of language practice. You can also use it to find resources, get help, and much more.

We used to have a list of great servers on Reddit, which as unfortunately become out of date as the links have expired. Luckily, it’s quite easy to find them with a simple Google search along the lines of “french learner discord” or similar.

🌐Language learning

Someone’s guide to learning a language in a year.

People recommend the YouTube polyglots they think are the most honest about their abilities.

I found someone’s guide to learning languages. I’m still working through it, I don’t agree with every take and I think he is a tad over-opinionated, but overall he makes good resource recommendations.

💻From around the web

Why do some slang words stick around?

When did languages standardise spelling?

Most of the Turkic languages agree on a common alphabet.
