Thanks for your patience during my unexpected (and very much enjoyed) newsletter break.
These past few weeks have been very hectic, in a good way, with a number of events taking my weekends and evenings. Mondecast has had to take a brief pause so that I can do these things and also sleep.
Not to worry, I’m back. Today’s episode is going to touch on a bit of drama in the linguistics communicator field.
🛠️Resource spotlight: Lute 3
LUTE (Learning Using Texts) is a free, open source alternative to programs like Lingq. It lets you track words known and get translations for text content you are using.
The disadvantage is it doesn’t have a .exe. You need to do a bit of work to install it, which might be bit complicated for those who are not technically minded.

We get two fun ones from LanguageJones this week. The first one is an overview of linguistics, mainly useful for those who have seen some linguistics content and want to know what the actual field is about.
The other one by LanguageJones is a bit more spicy. I didn’t have linguistics communicator drama on by bingo card, but this week we got a very negative review of the new book Algospeak by popular TikTok creator EtymologyNerd.
In it he argues that the author makes numerous false statements among other issues. If you’ve heard of EtymologyNerd it’s worth watching.
